A 3-hour drive northeast of Helena through Great Falls, Lewis and Clark National Forest is a 7,500 km 2 national forest named in honor of the Lewis and Clark expedition who passed through their journey to the West between 1804 and 1806. It is one of the oldest forest reserves in the United States. The vast area encompasses thirteen counties, seven distinct zones and 7 mountain ranges. It is characterized by woodland valleys, high mountain summits and vast meadows. It is an ideal place to hike, ski or simply enjoy wilderness. The site hosts 29 campsites accessible by car. There are also fishing and hunting facilities. In winter, it is possible to cut off its Christmas tree or bring fire to the fireplace.
