South Pass City, which owes its name to the South Pass Pass, is a small isolated town south-east of the Yellowstone and Grand Teton Parks, a few kilometers south of the huge Wind River Indian Reserve, which was from the first half of the nineteenth century a frequent passage for the various explorers and migrants, since the famous ornaments of the Orore Egon and California borrowed it before separating further west. The city, which hosted a telegraph station, was a stop on these tracks. Then, in 1866, gold was discovered around the area, and a year later, the Carissa mine attracts prospectors and miners. The city thus passes from a population of a few people to more than 2,000 inhabitants. One of his residents, Esther Hobart Morris, also participates in his reputation. She was the first woman in the United States to become a justice of peace in 1870. Moreover, Wyoming became the first state to grant women voting rights in 1920. With the end of mining, South Pass City gradually emptied and today you will cross more hikers using Continental Divide National Scenic Trail or tourists who come to explore the historic village of South Pass City Historic Site than premises.
