It covers an area of 45,708 hectares and was created to protect the vegetation of the Huasco coastal desert. The park is home to over 220 plant species, of which 206 are endemic to Chile and 14 are found only in the Atacama region. It is also home to several endangered species, including the guanaco, Chile's largest wild mammal. The park offers several hiking trails, including the Centenary Interpretive Trail and the Los Corrales Trail. Picnic and camping areas are also available. Accommodation and catering services are available in Huasco, as well as in the nearby towns of Freirina and Vallenar.
