The small town that has developed around the exploitation of coal, livestock and the railways is now mainly living in its natural resources (oil, methane and coal). It is called the energy capital of the nation. In the 1960 s, the population of the city doubled from about 3,500 to over 7,000 people. This very rapid increase has of course upset the organization of the city (inflation of the cost of living, crime…) and the city has thus become an illustration of the impact of too fast growth for the American psychologist eldean Kohrs who developed the concept of «Gillette syndrome» in 1974. Gillette is not an essential step in a trip to the region but may be the subject of a pleasant stop to cut off the road along the road to Yellowstone Park west or the Black Hills to the east. You will find affordable hotels and some restaurants concentrated mainly on the main street of the small historic center.
