SIYADI ARCHITECTURAL ENSEMBLE (SIYADI COMPLEX)
3 distinct and powerful Muharraq constructions that make up the finale of the Pearl Route, including the mosque, the majlis and the residence.
This architectural complex was owned by the Siyadi family, one of the most powerful in Muharraq. These tajir al-lu'lu' settled in Bahrain in the early 19th century. Three distinct buildings make up the Pearl Route finale.
The mosque: Muharraq's oldest mosque. It dates from 1865, and was renovated in 1910. A one-storey building with a conical minaret, the Siyadi still use it for one or other of their daily prayers. Its carved mihrab and restored woodwork make it a rare example of period religious architecture.
The majlis: you've already seen several of these reception rooms earlier in the tour. This is the most beautiful of them all. Construction of the first floor began in 1850, under the direction of Ahmad bin Jassim Siyadi. The second floor was built in 1921. This majlis bears witness to the omnipotence of the great pearl merchants, the only ones who could negotiate with foreign buyers. The stained-glass windows, mosaics and friezes form one of the most beautiful ensembles in the kingdom. Every decorative element is designed to impress visitors and establish the prestige of its owners.
The residence: occupied since 1931, this is the largest building in the complex. The Siyadi still live here, so it is off-limits to the public. The richly ornate exterior hints at the splendour of this emblematic Bahraini residence.
