NEW PARLIAMENT
Also known as the Sri Lankan Parliament or the New Parliament Complex, this beautiful modern-style building stands on the island in the center of Lake Diyawannawa, where the palace of King Vikramabahu III's minister, Nissaka Alakesvara, once stood. The island was later owned by Edward Walter Perera (1875-1953), a leading figure in the island's independence movement, before becoming state property. Designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa, the new Parliament was built between 1979 and 1982 and inaugurated by parliamentarians in April 1982.
