The capital of Manipur is the second-largest city in northeast India, with a population of almost one million, including the metropolis. Situated 50 km from Myanmar, the city occupies a strategic position between the two countries, and was the site of the Battle of Imphal during the Second World War between Allied forces and the Japanese attempting to penetrate India. Unlike the rest of the state, Imphal's population is predominantly Hindu (70%), with 10% Christian and just under 4% Muslim. Some 50 km to the south lies Keibul Lamjao National Park, renowned for its sangai, an endemic species of Eld deer.
