An imposing fortress-like structure, consisting of three enclosures closed by a wall that opens onto a large square courtyard
Nestled in the heart of green hills - with the only Quercus pyrenaica oak grove in Catalonia - the royal monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, whose name comes from the Latin "pobletum", is still in operation and is without doubt the most important and best preserved Cistercian complex of its time. It was founded in 1151 by 12 monks from the Abbey of Fontfroide, on the orders of Ramón Berenguer IV, who was responsible for the reconquest of Catalonia and its unification with Aragon. The kings of Aragon-Catalonia set their sights on this monastery, making it one of the most protected in the kingdom. As a mark of their esteem, they decided to make it their royal pantheon and spent colossal sums of money to embellish it, generation after generation. From the 16th century onwards, the monastery gradually lost its importance and was even considered a place of decadence by the entire local population. In 1835, the Carlist revolution did not spare it: it was plundered and ruined. In 1940, Italian Cistercian monks began the restoration of the buildings, and less than ten years later the monastery was restored to its former glory.
The imposing fortress-like complex is made up of three enclosures closed by a wall that opens onto a large square fortified courtyard. The Porte des Prades allows you to enter the first enclosure reserved for agricultural activities. There is the Saint-Georges chapel (1452), in Gothic style with a beautiful façade. The Golden Gate (15th century) opens the second enclosure where the chapel of Saint Catherine (1250) of late Romanesque style is located. The Royal Gate flanked by two towers gives access to the third enclosure protected by imposing walls.
As is often the case, the cloisters, the center of monastic life, are the most beautiful part of the monastery. In late Romanesque style, they are embellished with a fountain and an elegant pavilion and open onto a series of rooms: a splendid Gothic chapter house, wine cellars, the monks' kitchen and refectory dating from the 12th century, and a library. Below, the three-aisled church houses the Royal Pantheon: located on either side of the nave, the alabaster tombs of the kings of Aragon, extremely damaged in 1935, have been meticulously restored by Frederic Marès.
In the center, the Renaissance altarpiece of the high altar is a monumental work attributed to Damià Forment. Finally, we will show you the dormitory, 87 m long, partly occupied nowadays by the monks' cells. A site classified by Unesco.

Très beau site à voir mais dommage que'il n'y ai qu'un document à lire pour la visite et tout est minuté. ..
Préférence pour le monastère de Sante Creus, pas très loin, superbe aussi et la visite plus agréable !!!
Le monastère est structuré en trois enceintes et entouré d’une muraille défensive. De l’extérieur à l’intérieur, on traverse une première enceinte qui abrite essentiellement des espaces liés à l’aspect financier de la communauté et des bâtiments du 16e siècle (logements pour les travailleurs laïcs, réserves, ateliers), de même que la chapelle gothique Sant Jordi (1452). On pénètre dans la deuxième enceinte par la Porte Dorée fortifiée. On y trouve la Grand-Place et tout autour, entre autres, la chapelle Santa Caterina, les vestiges de l’hôpital des pauvres. Ce n’est qu’en atteignant la troisième enceinte, celle la plus à l’intérieur, qu’on pénètre dans l’espace monastique comprenant l’église, les cloître et les salles réservées à la vie monastique.
Préparez-vous à en avoir plein les yeux! C’est un complexe religieux de grande ampleur où on visite l’église, le réfectoire, le cloître, la salle capitulaire, le dortoir, le scriptorium ainsi que l’aile des frères laïcs dans l’enceinte ouest, le Palais de l’Abbé et j’en passe. Réservez assez de temps pour pouvoir en profiter pleinement et n’hésitez pas à prendre l’audio-guide qui recèle une mine de renseignements pour mieux apprécier le lieu.
Bien situé entre les deux capitales de Saragosse et Barcelone, Poblet est comblé de bienfaits par les rois d’Aragon qui en ont également fait leur panthéon royal de 1196 à 1479. On n’en repart pas sans avoir été ébloui par ces tombes localisées dans l’église et disposées de façon unique.
L’abbaye perd de son importance au 16e siècle puis connaît les affres des guerres napoléoniennes et en 1835, la suppression des ordres religieux fait cesser la vie monastique, ce qui cause la dégradation des lieux jusqu’à ce que l’État intervienne en 1849 pour mettre fin à ce processus. La reconstruction commence en 1930 et dès 1940 la vie monastique, cistercienne encore, reprend à l’abbaye. Nous sommes passés au magasin (où on achète aussi les billets d’entrée) et les produits mis en vente sont de qualité – nous en avons d’ailleurs rapporté des souvenirs!
