DUOMO
Cathedral with a crypt with columns and vaults decorated with stucco and paintings
The Duomo, or Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, dominates the hill on which the Lombards founded the city of Avellino. Nothing remains of the original building; the current construction dates back to the 12th century, with a 19th-century neoclassical façade. The crypt alone is worth a visit, with its forest of columns supporting vaults adorned with 18th-century stuccowork and paintings. To the right of the Duomo, the Romanesque campanile rests on a base scaffolded with fragments of Roman remains from the 1st century BC.
