From 1845 to 1867, the Burra mine (also called Monster Mine) was operated underground, up to 183 m deep and was for 10 years the largest copper mine in Australia. She made the fortune of many of her shareholders and her discovery marked the beginning of a period of unprecedented prosperity and growth for the State of South Australia. Its open-cut (Open Cut) operation began in 1870 but the collapse of the copper course led to the closure of the site in 1877. Burra Mine remained abandoned until 1971. Its open-sky operation ended in 1981 with the exhaustion of ore. The site is impressive and has become the main point of interest of the city. Many views are accessible near the main parking and the access road.
