MONT DAISEN

Visible from many parts of the prefecture, Mount Daisen impresses with its 1,709 metres. It is the highest volcanic mountain in the prefecture. Designated a national park of Japan in 1936, this volcano, also known as the "Little Fuji", in reference to its iconic shape that stands out beautifully from the landscape, is a popular destination for nature lovers, whether for hiking or skiing in winter. It is only about ten kilometres from the coast and therefore offers, from its summit, a sensational panorama of the surroundings and the Sea of Japan. It takes between 5 and 6 hours of walking, round trip, to climb from the Daisen-ji temple. This beautiful Buddhist temple was built on the slopes of the sacred mountain. Its building dedicated to the Amida statue, as well as other parts of the temple, have been designated a National Treasure. During the autumn, the mountain is adorned with its warmest colors, which gives the hikes a very poetic dimension. The Oki Islands can be seen from the summit in good weather. More than 10,000 people climb the mountain every year. The numerous hiking trails allow you to explore the surrounding nature and regularly come face to face with a temple or sanctuary. Once you've visited the Daisen-ji, turn left around the Daisen-ji to get to the Ogamiyama-jinja Shrine. It is reached by a long stone path, worn out by time, amidst cedars and lush nature. This path requires some effort, the number of steps being quite large. In winter, the atmosphere and activities change, as snow falls in abundance. This is not to displease winter visitors who can then enjoy the best ski area in western Japan. The latest statistics show that up to 90 cm of snow can fall in February. There are several ski resorts including the Daisen White Resort (www.daisen-resort.jp). If you want to know more about hiking before you go, whatever the season, go to the Daisen national park center (8:00-18:30) at the foot of the mountain. There are a number of brochures, maps and useful information to help you tackle the climb to the sacred volcano. Also along Miyukisandohon Street, leading to the Daisen-ji, there are several shops and stalls for post-hike shopping. It is possible to stay at the foot of the mountain in one of the few accommodations there.
