It's the largest salt lake in the West Indies, declared a natural park, with its 265m2 of surface area surrounded by arid landscapes, and Isla Cabritos in the middle. It's like being in Africa! Three times saltier than the Caribbean Sea, it lies 40 m below sea level. Here, the intense sun and salt bleach the wood until it's immaculate. The lake is home to the largest colony of American crocodiles, iguanas and pink flamingos. Strange phenomenon: scientists have observed a rise in water levels. This is thought to be due to a breach in the tectonic fault just below the lake, which triggered the Haiti earthquake in 2010.Three islands occupy the center of Lake : Isla Cabritos, Isla Barbarita and Islita. The largest of the three, Isla Cabritos (24 km², 12 km long and 2.5 km wide at its widest point), is also a national park, with protected flora and fauna. Today, it is the world's largest reserve of American crocodiles, an endangered species that numbers around 400 individuals. There are also over 60 species of birds, including pink flamingos, and 106 species of plants. It's best to get to the island very early in the morning to observe the animals, which hide from the sun from 11am onwards.
