With an area of 972,000 km², it is the largest park in the world and the only one in Greenland. However, because of its size and inaccessibility, it is not a national park in the traditional sense. Apart from the staff of a few weather stations and the Danish Armed Forces surveillance unit, the elite Sirius Patrol, no one lives there. Carrying a rifle in addition to radio equipment is mandatory as nature is wild and hostile. This immense area is an arctic paradise known for its exceptional flora and fauna. Since 1977, the park has been recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO
