Kulusuk (literally "the torso of a black guillemot") is located at the port on the banks of the Torsuut Tunoq River a few kilometres from the airport. Relatively small in size, it measures 8 km by 11 km and is located 20 km east of Tasiilaq. It is hilly with several distinct mountains that dominate the eastern and southern coast. The southernmost point is called Cape Naujaangivit near Isikajia Mountain while the highest point is Qalorujoorneq Peak (behind the airport). It was founded in 1909 by the crew of a Danish ship that ran aground on the coast and stayed there for a while to rebuild their ship
