KVANEFJELD AND ILIMMAASAQ
Narsaq is located in a fjord known for its mineral deposits (granite, sandstone, lava...) and therefore represents a major attraction for geologists or stone collectors. 8 km northeast of Narsaq, in Kvanejfeld (879 m), you can admire the semi-precious stone called tuttupit (literally "reindeer stone") recognizable by its pink veins. This stone is considered to be the national stone of Greenland and is only found in the area of Ilimmaasaq (another beautiful 1,390 m surrounding mountain) near Narsaq and so far has only been found in rare places in the rest of the world. Not far away, a uranium mine is scheduled to resume operations soon. Be careful not to drink the water near the mine, which may be radioactive
Good to know: for fans of stone, try to get your hands on Henning Sørensen's exciting book Geological guide south greenland (the narsarsuaq, narsaq, qaqortoq region). It details all the (rare) stones present in the region and allows you to learn what you have collected thanks to the photos! It's sold in the Blue Ice Explorer bookstore. Otherwise, a Parisian shop called Pierres du Groenland also sells pretty stones directly from the frozen island: a good address for those who would not have been able to find what they were looking for on the spot! Be careful, it is forbidden to pick up tuttupit and to bring back some: you have to go directly to buy some in the shop.
