Not far from the village of San Piero in Campo, in the small town of Pozzondoli, there is the very last active granite quarry on the island of Elba. Established in 1937, this company experienced a boom of activity during the post-war reconstruction years, but unfortunately suffers today from the crisis and competition; granite from China being much cheaper . This would be without counting on the six die-hard workers who continue to keep this precious quarry alive, from extraction to the finest cut, thus continuing the thousand-year history of Elbe granite. This is the perfect opportunity for the most interested and curious among you to see blocks of granite worked using different techniques, urban furniture, outdoor and indoor decorative objects.
Here is the opportunity to make a little historical reminder! Around 250 B.C., under Roman domination, granite work developed in the west of the island of Elba. Enormous blocks are taken off the mountains and rolled on tree trunks to the port. Elbo granite quickly became very popular, and decorated prestigious places such as the columns of the Pantheon in Rome, the Baptistery of Pisa, or the Boboli fountain in Florence.
Keep your eyes open! If you pass through Poggio, east of Marciana, Piazza del Castagneto is beautifully covered with granite from the Beneforti quarry.
