SWALLOW CAYE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The creation of this sanctuary, dedicated to the protection of manatees - large marine mammals that resemble large sea cows - dates back to 2002, after years of effort on the part of the region's tourism operators. Today, excursions consist of gently approaching the manatees (by switching off the engine)... but be warned, it is forbidden to slip into the water to swim with them, unlike in the United States.
