The southernmost island of the province of Livorno, a hostile granite rock uninhabited in Montecristo
Situated south of theIsola d'Elba, between Corsica and Tuscany, Montecristo is the southernmost island of the province of Livorno. It is a hostile uninhabited granite rock, made famous by Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which evokes the presence of a legendary treasure. Visible from quite a distance, this wild massif, entirely granite, culminates at 645 metres above sea level, like a breast raised towards the sky.
Within the Tuscan archipelago, the natural sanctuary of Montecristo is placed under the protection of the Council of Europe, which imposes restricted and strictly regulated access, granted only with special authorisation (available online). The visit remains relatively short, and there is no possibility to sleep there. The only occupants of the island are the caretaker with his family and two guards in the Villa Reale in Cala Maestra. There is no ferry to Montecristo, only authorized boats. However, it is possible to book in advance (count 30 days in advance) a guided tour of about six hours (bearing in mind that it is forbidden to fish or swim), from1 April to 15 July and from 31 August to 31 October, for a maximum of 1,000 visitors a year (and there are many requests...). Lovers of wild nature, legends and mystery, if you are interested in discovering the island of Montecristo, please contact the office of the Corpo Forestale dello Stato, sezione di Follonica (✆ +39 056 640 611).
