Villa located on the arrival bay of Cala Maestra, the one and only building present on Montecristo

If you are one of the lucky few to be able to land on the island of Montecristo, sometimes called the "forbidden island" because of its inaccessibility, this is your first place to visit: the Villa Reale. Located on the arrival bay, called Cala Maestra, on the western side of the island, it is the one and only building on Montecristo. Built in the 19th century by the Englishman George Watson-Taylor, Villa Reale now houses the island's guards, as well as a small natural history museum and botanical gardens. For the historical record, Watson-Taylor sold the villa in 1899 to the Savoys, the Italian royal family, which they used as a base for their hunting parties.

Following this visit, there are three authorized hiking itineraries available. The first two, following different paths, lead to a panoramic viewpoint. The third route, the longest and most difficult, takes you to the monastery of San Mamiliano (St. Mamilian), who in the middle of the5th century, fleeing from the Vandals of Genseric, built this monastery with his followers on the refuge island of Montecristo. Nearby are the ruins of the Grotta del Santo (Cave of the Saint), where, according to legend, the saint killed a terrible winged dragon, guardian of the island.

Whichever route you choose, keep your eyes open! The island of Montecristo, long steeped in mystery, is home to many endangered species and is an important stopover for migratory birds. And really, enjoy every moment on your exclusive excursion to Montecristo, the island known to Greeks, Etruscans, Romans and Saracen pirates for its oak forests and local pink granite quarries. The island is also known for being the setting of Alexandre Dumas' famous novel, but also for its incredible biodiversity and unspoiled nature.

Last but not least, all hikes require suitable walking shoes and hiking poles are recommended. As there is no food or drink available on the island, participants should bring enough water and consider a picnic if they wish. The more vigilant hikers may catch a glimpse of the rare Sardinian frog or the wild goats, with their long curved horns, probably imported by past sailors. We can't tell you enough, remember to book your discovery of Montecristo well in advance, as the few dates for visits fill up quickly!
