Carterville was founded in 1875. It was then just one of the many mining camps in the Tri-State (southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma). Today, the town is home to less than 2,000 people and is easily traversed by its main street lined with charming single-family homes and disused red brick buildings. At 328 E. Main St., the Famos Grill Italian Smokehouse occupies what was once a gas station in the early 1930s. The establishment later became an ice cream store until the late 1990s.A little further, at 221, Supetam on 66 was inaugurated in 2006. Its owner, Larry Tamminen, had to rename the store from Superman on 66 for copyright reasons, placing the T in his name instead of the M. The old streetcar next door dates from the beginning of the 20th century. At number 401, two buildings are worth mentioning. First, the West Hardaware Co building from 1900, which was a prosperous business in the city at the beginning of the 20th century and, transformed into a tiny stone-walled dwelling, the old Rock Gas Station. Finally, at number 520, you can't miss the Bulger's Used Car Lot with, among other things, a model of the tow truck from which the character Marter from the cartoon Cars was drawn.
