Guirevi, which also has beautiful towers, is the last village you can enter without showing your passport. There is a military post where you have to ask for a pass if you want to continue (and for example walk to the Atsounta pass, to reach Khevsourétie on the other side). The Chechen border is close by, on top of the mountains to the east, and the historic pass routes to Chechnya are here.
