Located halfway between Carapacho and Santa Cruz, São Mateus is more commonly known as Praia ("beach"), and for good reason: it's the only place on the island where you'll find a real sandy beach. Still, the locality is sure to please bathers in need of a soft place to lay their towel! Changing rooms, showers and a bar-restaurant are nearby, as are two highly recommended rural tourism accommodations. Just opposite the village, the islet Praia is an important nature reserve, classified as a "Special Protection Area", due to the many species of seabirds that use it for nesting.
