ROARING FORK MOTOR NATURE TRAIL
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail in Galtunburg, featuring a driving loop that goes deep into the national park
A beautiful driving loop that winds its way into the Smoky Mountains National Park for just over 8 kilometers (only accessible from Gatlinburg). The road is punctuated by a number of trailheads that take you on foot to nature trails, waterfalls and historic cabins. There's no shortage of hiking opportunities, and bear sightings are not uncommon. A brochure is available from the Visitor Center for US$1.
For those wishing to spend more time in the park, you can reach the Great Smoky Mountains via the Sugarlands Visitor Center, and drive into the heart of the national park via the road that crosses it from northwest to southeast, i.e. from Tennessee to North Carolina.
