On 27 June 1864, the Union army, walking from Chattanooga to Marietta following the railway line, was stopped by the Cut Cut in Kennesaw Mountain. The National park preserves this battlefield where the fighting temporarily delayed the progress of General William T. Sherman to Atlanta. Despite their final victory, the Union forces endured about 3 000 victims, three times more than the southern forces.
