The Nieuw Nickerie municipal market isn't huge (don't expect the endless mazes and stalls of Paramaribo), but it's an obligatory and very pleasant stop-off for visitors keen to discover local specialities. The building is a large square with a classic tin roof, and is a great place to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables (and dried fish?) as well as to get to know the locals.
