THE OLD GREAT NORTH ROAD
Road built between 1825 and 1836 by convicts to find examples of well-preserved masonry: bridges and walls.
Between 1825 and 1836, 720 convicts were employed to build the road, which stretched 264 km from Sydney to the Hunter Valley settlements. Well-preserved masonry remains, including several bridges and retaining walls up to 12 metres high. The Great North Road was seldom used, and even abandoned in favor of the coastal road opened before its construction was completed. Only 43 km remain relatively intact. This section has been named The Old Great North Road and has become a very popular walking trail.
