Maoao (卯澳), the easternmost village in all of Taiwan, at km 110 of Provincial Road 2, has the distinction of having kept the same face as it did a hundred years ago. This is all the more surprising since in Taiwan new construction is preferred to renovation. The small houses built of stone and bamboo and covered with thatch are as old as the banyan trees planted along the riverbank. A real time travel that can be done very easily from Fulong or Yanliao. Some vestiges of the prosperity of the village are still visible, such as the Liyan shrine, a temple renovated and enlarged at different periods of history, the result of which is a mixture of kitsch style.
