Between Alcatraz and Pedro Vaz, Monte Penoso, of volcanic origin and with an altitude of 436 m, is the highest point of the island of Maio, which does not show much height. It is part of the protected natural reserves of the archipelago. Despite its small size, Maio proves that it can be diverse. Apart from its fine sandy beaches, the island also offers several hiking trails and, every season, more and more travelers even decide to explore it by bike. Monte Penoso is part of this non-seaside route. Despite its name, the climb is easy and from the top you can enjoy a panoramic view of untouched nature.
