VATNSFJÖRÐUR NATURE RESERVE

The Vatnsfjörður nature reserve, established in 1975, is rich in birdlife and is an important nesting area. It was in Vatnsfjörður that Flóki, the "raven" (an important character in the Icelandic sagas), spent the winter of 865, a few years before the country was colonized by his Viking compatriots. The remains of Flóki Vilgerðarson's farm are the oldest traces of habitation in Iceland.
