Close to Stóra-Vatnshorn is a historic site well worth a visit, since it was here that the famous Eiríkur Rauði (Erik the Red) built his farm in the 10th century, and where his son Leif Erikson was born. This Icelandic historical figure is best known for having been banished for murder and for having founded the first colony in Greenland. The site has also been extensively excavated, uncovering many traces and remains of the original building. A reconstruction of the house, based on the results of these excavations, can be found in the eponymous museum.
