With 112,000 inhabitants, Laoag is the capital of the province of Ilocos Norte. Long frequented by Chinese and Japanese merchants, it was visited around 1580 by Augustinian missionaries. It is best known as the stronghold of former dictator Marcos and his family, who continue to rule local politics to this day. The locals are very proud of this. There are many places of interest around Laoag, including Pagudpud beach and the Baroque churches. As the town has an airport with daily flights to Manila, it makes an excellent base in northern Luzon, after a tour of Banaue, Sagada, Baguio and Vigan.
