Selayar was historically a trading post frequented by merchants from China, the Philippines and Thailand. Precious artifacts, including the 2,000-year-old Dongson drum, bear witness to its past. Strategically located on the trade route to the Moluccas, Selayar was essential for the spice trade. The village of Benteng is home to an old Dutch prison. The gateway to the Taka Bonerate Park, Selayar, covered in tropical forests, offers a rich marine biodiversity and boasts magnificent beaches of white sand and turquoise waters, such as Baloiya, where the fauna includes tarsiers and wild boars.
