Visited mainly for its authentic, timeless whaling village, Lembata is vast and has a few forests in the interior. Some parts of the coast are planted with proud coconut palms. The rest is savannah, burned when dry to fertilize the soil. The villages on the north coast are renowned for their ikat, some of the finest in Nusa Tenggara. This is Melanesia, a stronghold of animism. In the mountains, you may have the opportunity to witness ceremonies involving animal sacrifices, as practiced by the Torajas.
