THE TORCH DOHA
Built in less than a year to carry the torch of the 2006 Asian Games high and underline the country's even greater ambitions, The Torch is reminiscent of a torch. The American Hadi Simaan and the French Étienne Tricaud are the architects. A parabolic tower crowned with a petal and a cone to house the flame, it was built on a 7-meter-thick raft on piles, due to the presence of weak chalk in the limestone soil! The central structure of the tower is made of concrete with a diameter varying between a maximum of 18 m and a minimum of 13 m, over 238 m. As you can see, The Torch is entirely covered with a stainless steel mesh with variable openings, giving an impression of transparency and lightness. The mesh is denser on the south side and also serves to protect from the sun. On the other hand, the porous facade reduces the aerodynamic drag and thus the loads due to the action of the wind and which could have been exerted with a solution of tight facade. The Aspire tower is crowned by the cauldron from which the flame of the Games sprang: a cone wrapped in a petal 60 m high. These details provided by the constructor Arcelor-Mittal did not dissuade the French Spiderman to offer himself the vertical with naked hand in 1 hour 20. Alain Robert, who started in the Verdon Gorge, has come a long way. The Torch is home to a luxury hotel with an elliptical pool, and a revolving restaurant with a 360° view modestly called Tree-Sixty.
