The Great Australian Bight is a bay stretching some 1,160 kilometers between Cape Catastrophe, at the tip of the Eyre Peninsula, and Cape Pasley in Western Australia. Historically, it was discovered by the Dutch navigator Thyssen in 1627, and more precisely charted by Matthew Flinders in 1802. It was subsequently reconnoitred on land by John Edward Eyre.In the center of the Great Australian Bight, the Great Australian Bight Marine Park is located some 80 kilometers west of the Yalata Roadhouse (it's a great place to sleep, eat, shop...). The establishment has recently been renovated) and 20 kilometers east of Nullarbor Roadhouse, on the eastern edge of Nullarbor National Park. It's an ideal place to watch southern right whales in winter, between June and October, as they migrate to Antarctica. Some of these whales measure over 18 meters and can weigh up to 80 tons! And don't hesitate to take a boat trip to get up close and personal with a guide. Information at the White Well Ranger Station on Head of Bight Road, 14 km east of Nullarbor Roadhouse.
