PRESIDIO MODELO

Inaugurated in 1928, this former penitentiary is built around four huge circular buildings. Within each of them, a central tower allowed a sentinel to monitor all prisoners, divided by two in each cell. Monitor and punish nature in a way! It is here that Fidel Castro and his companions will be imprisoned for 19 months after the attack on the Moncada barracks in 1953. Transformed into a museum, the places still remain stunning.
