TEATRO POPULAR OSCAR NIEMEYER
460-seat theater with an auditorium and café under the original spiral ramp, attracting skateboard enthusiasts
Inaugurated in 2007 and originally named the Popular Theatre of Niterói, it took the name of its creator, architect Oscar Niemeyer, in 2013 when the Caminho was inaugurated, dedicated to the considerable work of the architect who designed the headquarters of the PCF in Place Colonel Fabien, Paris. It has a very peculiar shape visible from afar, as it consists of a rounded and asymmetrical two-storey entity, covered by a large curved roof. Its large bay window faces the Guanabara Bay, the whole is splendid. It is accessed by a very original spiral ramp. On this face, we find yellow azulejos , illustrated with an allegorical fresco of women waving flags and dancing. The theatre has 460 seats, but the stage can be opened to the open air on the main esplanade, which can then receive nearly 20,000 spectators! All of the artist's genius can be found in this architectural magic trick. Inside the building there is also an auditorium. The theatre was restored in 2010 with a fixed external structure, still under Niemeyer's masterful guidance.
Under the ramp, a café attracts the young people of Niterói, especially skateboarders who take advantage of the large esplanade and ramps of the theatre to try their tricks. Since its opening, the place is always busy! Niteroi has a rich architectural offer that attracts cultural tourism to this side of the bay.
