The Misión de Santa María la Mayor is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Less accessible than those of Loreto, Santa Ana or San Ignacio Miní, the ruins of Santa María are located 120 km from Posadas on the provincial road No. 2 towards Uruguay. Like all reductions, it was moved after the attacks of the Portuguese "bandeirantes". The mission was founded in 1626 and had 993 inhabitants at its peak in 1744. It also housed a press that was used to print books such as The Art of the Guarani Language or Vocabulary of the Guarani Language. A small tourist information office welcomes visitors.
