In the southwest of Hunan province, close to the Guizhou border, the medieval village of Fenghuang is one of the best preserved in China and is a step of choice on your journey to South China. Along the surrounding hills and on the edge of the river Tuo, Fenghuang has an excellent fengshui, this Chinese art of géomancie, whose aim is to harmonize the environmental energy of a place so as to promote the health, well-being and prosperity of its inhabitants. One thing is sure, we feel good at Fenghuang… What a pleasure to walk through these paved aisles, and admire these houses as hanging over the river, and these architectural remains of the Ming and Qing dynasties! More than half of the village population belongs to the Miao and Specialities ethnic minorities. The Miao Rebellion (1854-1873) has its epicentre here before being violently repressed by manchu power. Chinese tourists are in large numbers to visit Fenghuang, and in times of national holidays, you will have to play the elbows to visit the places, making them less magical. Come out of season to enjoy the best of this charming river village listed in UNESCO World Heritage.
