Over 900 elephants roam peacefully between Botswana, where Mashatu is located, neighbouring Zimbabwe and South Africa across the river through the large trans-boundary nature park. With a little prodding from the rangers, you may be taken by 4WD to the lost city of Mapungubwe. At the end of the day, facing the saffron sunset, a climb on the rocky spur adorned with a baobab tree, near the oldest vestiges of sub-Saharan African history, will leave you with a memory for life. Beware of the access conditions: to be able to cross the Limpopo, you have to pass the border post of Pontdrif.
