It became a regional capital under the Kushans in the 2nd century, but was then attacked by the Huns, who destroyed the irrigation canals and destroyed the forgotten royal city. Led by Professor Tolstov, excavations began shortly before the Second World War. The frescoes discovered there are on display in St. Petersburg, but a collection of objects found on the excavation site by Igor Savitsky is on show at the Noukous Museum. Here at Toprak Kala, traces of the royal palace's many rooms and gardens are still visible.
