Nearly a million hectares of forest are home to some of the world's richest flora and fauna (alas, threatened by garimpeiros). The park is close to the town of Itaituba, 370 km south of Santarém, accessible by bus (in the dry season, 8-hour journey at best), boat (18 hours) or plane. The park was created to protect the numerous springs that feed the Tapajós and Amazonas rivers, home to many endangered species such as the jaguar and tapir. Amazonas National Park is home to the Tapajós River. Located between the municipalities of Maués (AM), Aveiro, Itaituba and Redenção (PA), it is ideal for ecotourism. The park is characterized by the coexistence of different ecosystems and is considered one of the world's richest places for birdwatching. Over 400 species have been recorded in the region since 1906, and it is believed that many more species have yet to be discovered. Species present in the region include the harpy eagle, golden parakeet and scarlet macaw. The Amazon National Park is part of the Madeira-Tapajós Biodiversity Corridor, an international conservation program whose current actions also encompass the Pau-Rosa National Forest, the Amaná National Forest and the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve, covering a total of 9,889,373.547 hectares. Visitors can find fairly inexpensive accommodation in the town of Itaituba. In the heart of the park itself, there are accommodations limited to 25 people.
