Above the village, you can see the stone ruins of the French fort and the graves of its sailors who perished during the rebellion of Chief Iotete. Nevertheless, the Marquesas seem to have digested the affair: a stele commemorating the 1838 meeting of the Marquesan chief and Admiral Dupetit-Thouars was inaugurated in 1988. Another one recalls the Franco-Marquisian battle of 1842.
