At 406 km northeast of Tahiti, Arutua is an almost round atoll, 29 km in diameter. Its 808 inhabitants (census 2017), grouped in the village of Rautini, still live according to the ancient customs of the Paumotu. They spend their evenings, sitting in the starry vault, singing and dancing, referring to ancient legends telling the lives of the gods and heroes, the spirit of sharks, the wrecks of exploratory canoes that are stranded on the reef or vahed of love.Arutua has a pass for small boats and an airport on the motu Tenihinihi, rebuilt after the cyclone of 1983. No bank, however: take your precautions. Residents live mainly in fish parks, perliculture and coprahculture. Lobster fishing is very well known. There are accommodation possibilities in the village, located half an hour from the airport.
