If the town has a few nice places to eat, it is especially known for its famous "Joe Dassin" beach. The singer, who discovered Polynesia in 1972 on the advice of his friend Carlos, quickly fell in love with it. He bought a superb property with a beach between the Toretorea and Tiamahana points; Tahaa then became his "own America". In 1980, at the age of 41, he died of a heart attack while having lunch at Michel and Eliane's in Papeete, which has since become Le Rétro; a commemorative stele still stands there. Today, Joe Dassin's beach remains a must-see in Tahaa: on foot or by boat, all excursionists pass by.
