KASBAH CARAVANSERAI MUSEUM
A beautiful collection of representative pieces of traditional crafts in a museum dedicated to the cultures of the Sahara.
Did you know that camels wear bras? The only way to find out is to visit this unexpected little museum, a veritable tribute to the cultures of the Sahara, housed in an old inn, or caravanserai, over 300 years old. Over the past four decades, Jamil Abdou has gathered together the finest examples of traditional Saharan craftsmanship and that of other nomadic tribes of the Sahara, as well as all kinds of objects that have marked the history of the region and beyond. He has patiently collected these objects from his own and other families, back in the days when the oasis was densely populated. Jamil Abdou has a real desire to pass on his knowledge, which is rare these days. From the moment you enter, you'll be bombarded with fascinating explanations. Today, the small museum boasts 16 rooms filled with floor-to-ceiling objects, some of which have the air of Ali Baba's cave: from the Egyptian water clock to whale vertebrae, from kitchen utensils to the beauty objects of nomadic women and sad irons dating from the slavery period... you'll be surprised by the variety of the collection presented here. Jamil Abdou, a veritable encyclopedia of desert culture, will explain everything in detail, and you'll want to spend hours in his company. Don't miss this essential stopover, which also helps to support this impressive work of memory.
