Travel Guide Donetsk (Донецьк)

Donetsk is one of the youngest cities in Ukraine. It was founded by English John Hughes in 1869, which founded a metallurgical industry and a labour village called «Yuzufka» in his honour. Donetsk's story is that of an industrial city, whose growth and wealth are linked mainly to coal mines and metallurgy. It's a city of close to a million souls, a modern and industrious one. If it does not necessarily distinguish itself from the wealth of tourist attractions for the visitor, it is one of the cities in the country that offers the best quality of life for its inhabitants. Donetsk is actually an incredibly green city, known by its beautiful roses adorning its streets, gardens, parks. The proximity of Donetsk to the Russian border is that the population is equally divided between Russians and Ukrainians and that Ukrainian is spoken about it as a second language. The poor command of Ukrainian by Viktor Yanukovych, the current president of Donetsk country and known for his connections with Moscow, is the subject of many jokes… Worn by the fortune of the industrialist Akhmetov Akhmetov, the Shaktar Donetsk, the local football team, has become a very competitive club at European level.
