Travel Guide Aire Nationale Protégée De Dong Phu Vieng

This protected area, located about 3 hours drive east of Savannakhet, contains a vast forest inhabited by mammals, lobsters and rare birds (hornbills and vultures for example). The Dong Sa'Kee forest is considered sacred by its inhabitants, members of the Katang ethnic minority, with a very different culture and beliefs from the Lao of the plains. Some tours allow you to spend the night in a Katang village. This is a relatively physical trek that will take you off the beaten track in the middle of the forest. Dong Phu Vieng was part of the famous Hô Chi Minh trail used during the Vietnam war.
