The capital of the district of the same name, Zanaga is a small town deep in the forest, a few kilometers from the Gabonese border and more than 250 km northwest of the capital. In the past, it produced Zanaga pearls, large glass paste beads that were highly prized throughout the region. Today, the town is known for its mining wealth. The town still boasts a neo-Romanesque church, a vestige of the colonial era. Nearby, in the Ntalé Mountains, lies the source of the Ogooué River, Gabon's main waterway, which Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza sailed upstream to penetrate the interior.
