Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a stunning natural wonder located in Colorado, USA. It’s known for its towering sand dunes, which are the tallest in North America, reaching heights of up to 750 feet (229 meters). These dunes are set against a backdrop of the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, creating a spectacular contrast of landscapes.

Visitors to the Great Sand Dunes can enjoy various activities such as sandboarding, sand sledding, hiking, and photography. Medano Creek, which flows at the base of the dunes seasonally, offers a unique aquatic experience where visitors can splash around and cool off during the warmer months.

Loved star gazing in this beautiful national park!

Hidden gem, definitely a unique experience. The park doesn’t rent out the boards for sliding, get them at the place just before the park. It is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the actual dunes.

Who goes to a National Park and doesn't leave a 5-star review or have a, "5-bags-of-popcorn," good time? The aforementioned < 5-star people are the people that I really want to meet to encourage them to just remain safely in their toilets like the obvious Ghoulies that they are. What, was the sand too sandy? Were the dunes too great? Was there too much sand...or not enough sand? Was the scenery too breathtaking? You know what is the only thing 1-star about the Great Sand Dunes National Park? The person that leaves a < 5-star review. They know who they are.

Dramatic landscape. All seasons are good here but it is cool to experience the Medano River.

Very cool place! Much bigger than expected. Bring a sled, go on a cool day. The dog loved it!

Absolutely stunning! Next time we would bring a picnic blanket to the base of the dunes and make a day of it. Don’t forget to bring a sled!

Incredible experience here. I wanted to mention that THIS is country’s largest SAND DUNES. Make sure to stop by the little shop on your way to the dunes for sand board/ sled rentals, very fun! Bring extra wax.

My son and I had a great time!!! Got there a little late for the board/sled rentals (close at 3:30pm) but had great time walking up the dunes which pictures don’t do justice of how big they are!

If you can, you should definitely rent a boogie board and hike to the top so you can sled down. Looked like great fun. Serene and peaceful. The Dunes in the distance look like a painting.

One of the best kept secrets in Colorado.
Mountains surrounding sand dunes with a stream in certain spring months.
Don’t forget the small towns along the ways, and make a loop back to denver the opposite direction that you came.

It is an amazing location, you visit the visitor center to learn about the area and check out the gift shop, out into the sands a major hike especially if you aren't used to altitude, to the stream that pulses and even up into the nearby mountains. Also the night sky is amazing to see, though plan around the moon for the best experience.

Amazing. Glad we went when it was still a bit cold, although I wouldn’t go in the winter. The weather changes quickly here.

The climb can be challenging. I share some experience in the video here (full on my IG).

Don’t make my mistake and get some proper hiking boots, if you gonna hike this thing for a while. That sand is getting everywhere for sure and it will be a challenge to get rid of it. Especially if sliding down those slopes.

Also, make sure to check the weather in advance and dress appropriately. I saw way too many people walking a bit only to realize they were risking freezing to death with the high winds and a snow cloud that suddenly came down the mountains.

It’s quite epic really and words cannot truly describe it. Be prepared to do some serious cardio and be out of breath. It’s high altitude so make sure you are in good enough condition to take in the challenge.

It is both difficult in the heart and the muscles as the feet tend to sink in under each step, especially during warmer months and if it hasn’t rained recently, making the climb more difficult.

It's out of the way for some of us, but if your traveling thru southern Colorado, it's worth your time to stop.

We visited the Sand Dunes for the sole purpose of climbing to the top of the highest dune, which was grueling and fun with great views. If the creek is flowing, it might be fun to hang out below as well. Renting sleds is a popular activity but I found out rather quickly that the sand is not a welcoming place to fall. It hurts. Would also recommend long sleeves, long pants, sunglasses at a minimum but goggles are even better - the blowing sand also hurts. Please don’t bring your dog; the sand is entirely too hot for their feet.

The Great Sand Dunes was an amazing experience for my group of friends.

We brought sleds and slid down the sides of the dunes near the parking lot, ran around in the river, and I climbed to the summit of high dune during the sunset. Looking down from the summit of the dunes at twilight was a surreal experience for me, and one that I would love to have again someday.

It got crazy windy here after the sun went down and sand started blowing everywhere, and it almost hurt to get pelted with the sand, so I would be mindful of the wind and plan appropriately.
